BORN STRONG: SOPHIE'S STORY

Sophie weighed just 1 pound, 9 ounces when she was born in August 2021, nearly four months premature. Her whole body fit into her father’s palm. Her tiny hand curled around the tip of his finger. The fragile newborn spent her first eight weeks in an incubator in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, connected to breathing tubes and monitors.

Today, Sophie is a strong, happy two-year-old. A healthcare team still follows her closely, but she is meeting her developmental milestones and making her parents proud and happy every day.

At Dalhousie, we believe in driving excellence in medical research and education, and that means setting up our research teams for success, in and out of the lab and classroom. Part of that is helping them to share the work they are doing with you, and with our community. You may recall receiving the Philanthropist Magazine in the mail in past years, a publication filled with stories of research excellence happening at Dalhousie’s Faculty of Medicine. Today, we’re excited for you to see our brand new magazine, REMEDY. It has a new name and a new look, but like our team, it carries forward the passion, energy, and impact that it always has.

A strengthened partnership in health research

For more than 40 years, Dalhousie and DMRF have shared a vision for health research in the Maritimes: to drive excellence in health and health care through world-class research and education.

To amplify their individual efforts, they formally joined forces in October 2022. This partnership has seen the two entities unite to create an expert team with a vision to collaboratively raise even more funds for health research and continue to support research excellence and promote healthy, strong communities.
