Expand your world and develop your global health skills
As a Dalhousie student, you can develop your skills in global health both in Canada and overseas. Opportunities include:
- electives in global health
- research in global health
- Advocates in Global Health Certificate
- global health events and activities on campus
Electives in global health
Graduate students focusing on health, including health promotion, community health and epidemiology and international development studies, have participated in international experiences. One example is the Tanzania summer program through the GHO. This program allows students to learn more about global health abroad while working with a team in an interprofessional setting.
Global health research
Students also have the opportunity to engage in research in global health settings. Dalhousie faculty will mentor your research journey to ensure that you have an appropriate question and methodology to work in low resource settings. There are national organizations that guide international research including the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research.
Planning your international experience
Planning your global health placement requires a lot of preparation. Use the pre-departure planning checklist to get you started.
All students participating in international electives or research must complete pre-departure training to help you prepare for your international experiences.
Advocates in Global Health Certificate
The Advocates in Global Health Certificate is a one-year program that encourages and recognizes your involvement in global health “outside the classroom”. The certificate includes mentorship, public engagement, leadership development, community service learning, volunteer work and enhancing skills.
