Pre‑Departure Checklist

What to do before you go

Are you preparing for one our of global health programs? Make sure that you go over our pre-departure checklist below. We've laid it out in a step-by-step process to ensure your experience is an easy one.

Step 1: Choose your elective/placement

  • Select your international placement
  • €Check the Travel Report and Warnings of any countries you intend to visit at Government of Canada's travel website (electives in countries where Global Affairs Canada has issued a Level 3 “Avoid Non-essential Travel” advisory will not be approved)

Step 2: Submit your applications

  • €Submit an application to the host institution requesting an elective placement, if required
  • €Submit an application to the GHO through our global health elective application form
  • €Submit an application through your Faculty (One45 for Dalhousie Medical School students) or School (OT/PT)
  • €Register for your course/elective through Dal Online, if necessary (required for SWIF funding and first and second year medical students)

Step 3: Prepare for your trip

  • €Complete the GHO pre-departure orientation session – to register for the session, please send us an email at gho@dal.ca and include your NetID and Banner Number in the email.
  • €Once you are registered, you will be able to access the orientation which will appear as a course on Brightspace: https://dal.brightspace.com/d2l/login
  • €Ensure your passport is up-to-date and valid for at least six months beyond the date of your trip
  • €Check for any Visa requirements for any countries you'll be visiting and apply if necessary

  • Register your emergency contact information with The International Centre & ROCA
  • Give a copy of your passport, placement details, travel itinerary and emergency contacts to a relative or close friend in Canada

Step 6: Budgeting

While abroad

  • €Contact the Canadian Consulate, the International Center or the GHO in an emergency
  • For students who wish to contact the GHO through Skype, our username is Global.Health.Office

Upon your return

  • Attend a GHO or departmental debrief session
  • €Submit your GHO quicklist and narrative report Report Template [PDF - 342 KB]
  • If you're feeling unwell, visit your physician and share details of the countries you have visited (a TB test is required if you've been exposed to the disease)
