Looking after ourselves is key to fulfilling one’s personal and professional roles.

“Energy management” requires a strong foundation including physical exercise, proper nutrition, adequate sleep and a balance between performing and rest. Consider the weight lifter. Repeated stress to a muscle results in microscopic damage that, if the stress continues, will result in worsening damage. Periods of restoration are required in order for the muscle to heal and become stronger making physical well-being key for residents who must sustain a high level of performance in a demanding, rapidly-changing medical environment. Trainees are also encouraged to have their own family physician.
