Research Curriculum

As part of the general surgery residency program, you will be required to complete at least one research project from inception through to knowledge dissemination. To help you achieve these goals, the program has a structured research curriculum which begins with basic research training within the Foundations of Surgery component of residency, and formalized supervision throughout your research undertakings. Research projects are available in both basic science (bench labs) and clinical epidemiology.

The Research Process

When it’s time to plan your research project, we recommend following this process:

Step 1: Contact the resident research director to discuss your research interests and find a research supervisor that suits your goals.

Step 2: Work with your research supervisor to develop research ideas and a research plan.

Step 3: Get in touch with the research office whenever you need help with:

  • your research plan or protocol development
  • your ethics submission
  • data collection requirements analysis and research database development
  • statistical analysis

Step 4: Action your research plan with the help of your supervisor by collecting the pertinent data and conducting data analysis.

Step 5: Summarize and disseminate your findings in a poster, presentations and/or journal article.
