Undergraduate Education

Build your base

In an area like critical care, there’s no room for error. That’s why we offer plenty of opportunity to build a strong foundation in your early medical years. Whether you’re doing a selective or backing up a resident on an overnight shift, you’ll have plenty of time to prepare for your future career.

Opportunities

Third-year clerks

During your third year, you can opt to complete a combined ICU/anesthesia selective rotation within the internal medicine block. If you do, you’ll spend three weeks in the ICU at either the Halifax Infirmary or Victoria General Site, with one week spent building your anesthesia knowledge in the operating room. While in the ICU, you’ll also participate in departmental academic activities like:

  • daily teaching sessions
  • weekly rounds
  • simulation sessions

You’ll also work five ‘buddy call shifts’, supporting a senior resident on an overnight shift.

Fourth-year clerks

You may choose two- or three-week electives in critical care during this year. You’ll also work three to four ‘buddy call shifts’, supporting a senior resident on an overnight shift.
