Leading innovation, inspiring compassion, transforming healthcare in the Maritimes

The first and only program in the Maritimes and second graduate-level physician assistant training program in Canada, Dalhousie’s MPAS gives its students the unique opportunity to receive cutting-edge medical education, hands-on clinical experience, and interprofessional collaboration.

Year 1 (Pre-clerkship)

The first year of the MPAS program is an intensive, foundational phase that combines case-based learning with early clinical exposure via high fidelity simulations and labs. During this year, students focus on mastering core medical sciences such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and pathology. Courses cover a wide range of subjects, including medical ethics, patient communication, and evidence-based medicine, laying the groundwork for effective clinical practice.

Throughout the first year, students work closely with clinician faculty (physicians and physician assistants), and other healthcare professionals, fostering a collaborative learning environment that is key to their future roles as integral members of healthcare teams.

Year 2 (Clerkship)

The second year of the MPAS program is an immersive, hands-on clinical phase where students apply the knowledge and skills gained in the first year to real-world medical environments. Students complete a series of clinical rotations in diverse medical specialties, including family medicine, emergency medicine, surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and psychiatry. These rotations take place in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings, allowing students to work directly with patients under the supervision of experienced clinician physicians and PAs.

In each rotation, students refine their clinical skills by diagnosing and treating patients, performing medical procedures, and collaborating with interdisciplinary healthcare teams. This year is critical for developing the practical competencies needed for independent practice, such as patient management, decision-making, and communication.

Throughout the year, students also receive ongoing feedback from clinical preceptors and engage in reflective learning to further enhance their professional growth. By the end of the second year, students are well-prepared to transition into the workforce as competent, compassionate, and collaborative physician assistants, ready to meet the needs of diverse patient populations.

Research in Medicine (RIM)

Through research projects, seminars, and faculty collaborations, Master of Physician Assistant Studies students have the chance to explore their research interests and make meaningful contributions to the PA profession and health human resources. Research and scholarly activities are carefully integrated into the MPAS curriculum. The longitudinal Research in Medicine seminar course equips students with research methodologies and critical appraisal skills.
