Residency
Honing your skills
Like all medical fields, surgery requires plenty of practical experience. Your residency will bridge the gap between your clerkship and your career by providing you with the knowledge, skills and attitude needed to provide excellent patient care.
As a resident at Dalhousie, you’ll spend time talking to and working with patients, and attending clinics and ORs. You'll also have an academic curriculum including seminars, skills sessions and journal club. You will work in various clinical centres around the Maritime provinces. Core rotations will be in Halifax, Fredericton, Moncton and Saint John. Elective rotation experiences are also available.
What you’ll learn
Your residency will cover a broad range of topics, including:
- medical problems in surgical patients
- postoperative care
- wound management
- metabolic and nutritional care
- legal and ethical responsibilities
- sepsis and surgical infections
