Undergraduate Education
Opportunities for medical students
Medical students are encouraged to learn about the exciting field of pediatric surgery.
Pre-clerkship (Med 1 and 2)
Pre-clerkship electives can be tailored to provide the exposure you desire, ranging from participation in outpatient clinic activities, to observing cases in the operating room. Our pediatric surgeons are also willing to mentor students interested in undertaking research projects.
We encourage students interested in learning more about pediatric surgery to contact us for an elective through christopher.blackmore@iwk.nshealth.ca or contact any of our surgeons directly.
Clerkship
Pediatric General & Thoracic Surgery educational opportunities are available during your clerkship through
- clinical rotations as part of the core General Surgery rotation during clerkship
- elective rotations
During clerkship rotations, students will experience full immersion in the Pediatric Surgery service, participating in rounds on the wards with the fellow, seeing inpatient and outpatient consults, seeing patients in clinic, and scrubbing in the OR. Clerks are encouraged to take an active role in our weekly teaching rounds, and there are plenty of opportunities for bedside teaching with the fellow and staff members. Clerks also participate in the call schedule and will have the opportunity to scrub in as 1st and 2nd assistant as appropriate with the staff surgeons and fellow.
