Message from the Assistant Dean

Thank you for your interest in the Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) program at Dalhousie University. As the Assistant Dean, it is my privilege to introduce you to a program that is grounded in academic excellence, clinical relevance, and a deep commitment to preparing the next generation of physician assistants (PAs). Dalhousie provides the first and only PA training program in Atlantic Canada, tailoring our curriculum to be applicable to the robust and diverse communities and populations of the East Coast. Our program was developed in response to the growing need for highly trained, collaborative providers who can enhance access to care and contribute meaningfully to Canada’s expanding healthcare system.

At the heart of our program is a dedicated team of experienced faculty and staff— PA and MD clinicians, educators, and researchers—who bring a wealth of real-world knowledge and a passion for teaching. Their expertise ensures that our curriculum is both current and comprehensive, blending medical science with practical, hands-on training that prepares students for the demands of modern clinical practice.

Throughout the program’s curriculum, students are immersed in a learning environment that emphasizes clinical competence, ethical practice, and interprofessional collaboration. The first year focuses on foundational medical sciences, clinical skills, and capstone projects that develop research and teamwork abilities. The second year provides diverse, in-depth clinical rotations, giving students direct experience with patients under the guidance of skilled preceptors across a range of specialties in Nova Scotia.

The MPAS program works closely with the Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine, particularly Undergraduate Medical Education, and our sister PA programs across Canada to continuously enhance our curriculum, share best practices in medical education, and advocate for the advancement of the PA profession. Through national collaboration and academic integration, we are committed to aligning our training with not only the national accreditation standards in PA training but also the evolving healthcare needs and promoting the recognition and integration of PAs across our country.

Our graduates emerge as confident, compassionate, and capable physician assistants, ready to make a difference in communities across Canada. We are proud to support our students every step of the way, fostering a culture of professionalism, inclusivity, and lifelong learning.

I encourage you to explore our program further and learn how we are shaping the future of healthcare—one PA at a time.
