About the student, resident and faculty awards

Office of Community Engagement Awards

The Office of Community Engagement Awards were established to recognize the outstanding contributions made to community engagement and global health by our Medical faculty and residents as well as students in Medicine, Health and Dentistry.

These annual awards are presented to individuals who advance the global health community at Dalhousie through community engagement activities such as:

  • Demonstrated leadership in global health 

  • Work experience with marginalized and underserved communities

  • Engagement in global health research

  • Mentorship in global health (Residents and Faculty only)

  • Promotion, development and enhancement of global health at Dalhousie (Residents and Faculty only) 

There are four awards:

Community Partner Award

Faculty leadership in global health Award

The Dr. John Savage Memorial Award for Faculty Leadership in Global Health was established in 2003 in memory of Dr. John Savage, a friend and colleague of the Dalhousie Medical School and a tireless champion of the need to promote healthy communities worldwide. A former physician, Premier of Nova Scotia and Mayor of Dartmouth, Dr. Savage had a long-standing commitment to global health projects in Africa with the Nova Scotia Gambia Association and other organizations. The Dr. Savage Memorial Award for Faculty leadership in Global Health recognizes an outstanding humanitarian contribution to global health by a Dalhousie Medical School faculty member. 

Prize
The award consists of a plaque.

Resident leadership in global health Award

The Dr. TJ (Jock) Murray Resident Award for Leadership in Global Health was established in 2010 to recognize excellence within residents at Dalhousie Medical School who demonstrate commitment to global health as they advocate for marginalized populations and explore new ways to engage in clinical service, education and research in underserviced populations in Canada and abroad. 

Dr. Murray is a world-renowned expert in multiple sclerosis, medical humanities and medical history. Dr. Murray is a former Dean of Dalhousie Medical School; Professor Emeritus at Dalhousie University and remains active in the Medical Humanities Program. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada and member of the Order of Nova Scotia. Dr Murray is a strong advocate for the values within global health.

The award consists of a plaque and a cash prize

Student leadership in global health Award

The Dr. Ronald Stewart Award for Student Leadership in Global Health was established in 2006 and is given to a student of Dalhousie Medical School or in the faculties of Health or Dentistry, who has demonstrated leadership in global health and a commitment to improving the health of marginalized communities during their time at Dalhousie. 

 

This award honours Dr. Stewart’s personal, professional and educational support and dedication to global health, and the advancement of social capital worldwide. Dr. Stewart, a former provincial Minister of Health and Order of Canada recipient, has been enriching students' experiences at Dalhousie Medical School for many years as a popular and accomplished educator, past director of the Medical Humanities program and a key champion for global health education.

Community Partner Award

This award honors individuals, organizations, or groups outside the university who have demonstrated exceptional partnership in advancing medical education. Through meaningful collaboration, shared purpose, and lasting impact, our community partners play a vital role in fulfilling the Faculty’s mission of Educational Excellence.

We invite nominations that showcase the spirit of partnership, innovation, and commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility that strengthens both our institution and the communities we serve.

Eligibility & Criteria Summary: 
Open to community partners outside Dalhousie University who have contributed to the faculty of Medicine’s mission within the past two years. Nominees should show excellence in one or more areas and must be nominated by a Dalhousie staff, faculty or student:

  • Collaboration: Sustained, reciprocal partnership through shared projects or initiatives.

  • Impact: Significant contributions to medical education, such as teaching or curriculum development.

  • EDIA: Advancement of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in medical education.

  • Innovation & Leadership: Creation or support of innovative practices and community leadership.

  • Sustainability: Builds long-term capacity and ensures partnerships continue to benefit future learners.
