Admissions

Matching you to a residency position

Admission to residency training at Dalhousie Medical School is conducted through the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS). CaRMS is a national, not-for-profit, fee-for-service organization that provides a fair and transparent application and matching service for entry into postgraduate medical training throughout Canada.

The first iteration of CaRMS

The first iteration of the CaRMS match is open to:

  • Canadian citizens
  • Permanent Residents of Canada

Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada can apply to the first iteration of CaRMS through one of two parallel streams:

  • one stream for graduates of Canadian or American medical schools whose undergraduate program is accredited by the Liason Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) and who haven't had previous post-MD/clinical training
  • a second stream in CaRMS is open to Graduates of Non-LCME/CACMS-Accredited Medical Schools including graduates of US Schools of Osteopathic Medicine (GNLCAMS) without previous Canadian post-MD/clinical training. These positions are identified as IMG positions on the CaRMS site.

GNLCAMS with previous postgraduate training in either Canada or the United States (and creditable for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada certification) aren't eligible to participate in the first iteration for Dalhousie residency positions.

Additional information for GNLCAMS applying to first iteration:

There will be a selection of positions that are annually made available exclusively to GNLCAMS in the first iteration of the CaRMS match. Individuals matching to these positions are required to sign a return of service (ROS) contract with the sponsoring provincial Department of Health. Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island all sponsor such positions in the match, though the numbers sponsored vary from year to year.

Please visit the CaRMS website for up-to-date information.

The second iteration of CaRMS

Unfilled positions are open to all candidates including graduates of Canadian Medical Schools and GNLCAMS who fulfill the eligibility criteria.

Applicants matched in the second iteration to unfilled first iteration GNLCAMS positions are required to sign a return of service contract with the specific sponsoring agency prior to starting their residency.

GNLCAMS matched to non-dedicated unfilled positions in the second round are not required to sign a return of service contract.
