Medical Education Teaching and Research Office (METRO)

The Medical Education Teaching and Research Office (METRO) provides leadership for the development, delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement of educational programming across Dalhousie University's postgraduate medical education (PGME) system. METRO works collaboratively with residents, faculty, program directors, and program administrators to support educational excellence, leadership development, scholarly activity, and continuous quality improvement. 

Educational Program Development and Delivery

METRO designs, coordinates, and evaluates educational programs that address common learning needs across residency training programs, including:

  • Core educational sessions for residents
  • Communication skills training
  • Leadership development programming
  • Wellness and professional development initiatives
  • Sessions addressing emerging priorities in postgraduate medical education
  • Educational programming delivered in person, virtually, and across distributed campuses throughout the Maritimes 

Faculty, Program Director, and Program Administrator Development

METRO supports the professional development of individuals involved in residency education by:

  • Providing educational sessions for Program Directors and Program Administrators
  • Supporting educational leadership development
  • Offering workshops and resources on curriculum design, assessment, feedback, and learner support
  • Developing faculty development initiatives in collaboration with educational partners across the Faculty of Medicine 

Educational Consultation and Program Support

METRO provides consultation services to residency programs and PGME stakeholders by:

  • Identifying and addressing faculty-wide educational needs
  • Connecting programs with educational expertise and resources
  • Assisting with curriculum planning and enhancement
  • Supporting the implementation of best practices in postgraduate medical education
  • Providing guidance on topics such as assessment, feedback, professionalism, hidden curriculum, leadership, and equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) 

Evaluation and Continuous Quality Improvement

METRO leads the evaluation of educational initiatives and supports data-informed improvement through:

  • Development and administration of program evaluations
  • Analysis and reporting of educational outcomes
  • Collection and interpretation of learner and stakeholder feedback
  • Continuous quality improvement processes to enhance educational programming and the learning environment
  • Support for broader PGME evaluation and reporting activities 

Educational Scholarship and Research

METRO promotes scholarly activity and educational research within postgraduate medical education by:

  • Supporting research and scholarship related to medical education
  • Facilitating evaluation and educational research projects
  • Encouraging dissemination of educational innovations and outcomes
  • Contributing to evidence-informed approaches to residency education and educational leadership
