Welcome to Dalhousie University.
Whether you are joining us as a resident or fellow, or continuing your training within one of our programs, I am delighted to welcome you to our Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) community.
By choosing Dalhousie, you are joining a community dedicated to delivering world-class medical education while improving the health of patients, families, and communities we serve. You will learn, work, and grow within a tradition of excellence that spans more than 150 years of medical education while helping shape the future of health care across Atlantic Canada and beyond.
As you begin your training, we acknowledge that our campuses and clinical learning environments are located on the ancestral and unceded territories of the Mi'kmaq, Wolastoqey, and Peskotomuhkati Peoples. We also recognize the enduring contributions, cultures, histories, and communities of African Nova Scotians, whose presence and leadership have shaped Nova Scotia and continue to enrich the communities we serve. These acknowledgements reflect our commitment to reconciliation, equity, inclusion, cultural safety, and social accountability in medical education and health care.
One of the greatest strengths of our PGME community is its people. Our learners come from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, identities, experiences, and pathways to medicine. We are proud of that diversity and of our commitment to creating a learning environment where everyone feels welcomed, respected, supported, and empowered to succeed. We believe that excellence in education, patient care, research, and leadership is strengthened by the diverse perspectives and experiences that each learner brings.
You will train in a distributed learning environment that spans Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, including Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick (DMNB), the Cape Breton Medical Campus (CBMC), and numerous academic, community, regional, and rural training sites throughout Atlantic Canada. These experiences provide opportunities to learn from exceptional educators, care for diverse populations, and develop a deeper understanding of the unique strengths and healthcare needs of the communities we are privileged to serve.
As Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education, I want you to know that your success and well-being matter to us. Residency and fellowship training are both challenging and incredibly rewarding experiences. There will be opportunities for growth, discovery, and achievement, as well as moments when you will need support. Throughout your journey, you will be surrounded by dedicated faculty, program leaders, administrators, staff, and fellow learners who are committed to helping you succeed and reach your full potential.
