The PGME office recognizes the exceptional skills of our trainees by offering a variety of scholarships and awards annually. Please read through the current scholarships and fellowships below, as well as our departmental awards, and their application processes.
Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation Fellowships
Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation Fellowships are available to medical graduates or graduates of recognized PhD programs. Applications must be in postgraduate training at Dalhousie in basic or clinical science for a period of one to three years.
The level of support will be determined by the Medical Research Council of Canada's scale of pay for MDs, based on the number of years of postgraduate training. Preference will be given to candidates who have potential to contribute to academic medicine in Maritime Canada.
Fellowship competitions are generally held in April each year but deadlines will vary. To obtain a current schedule of competitions, terms of reference and applications visit the Foundation's website.
The Ross Stewart Smith Memorial Fellowship in Medical Research
This fellowship, being a portion of the income from a generous bequest to Dalhousie University, was established by Dr. James Ross Smith and his wife, the late Mrs. Eliza Cochran Smith, as a memorial to their son, Ross Stewart Smith, who died while attending Dalhousie.
It's open to students of exceptional ability following graduation from Dalhousie Medical School. The fellowship is provided to support research-related cost. The research may be in clinical medicine or in the basic medical sciences.

Samuel R. McLaughlin Fellowship
In 2001, the Samuel R. McLaughlin Foundation donated $500,000 to Dalhousie as a final gift before closing its doors permanently. The purpose of the fund is to support medical fellowships, medical training or research or other medical education programs.
Candidates must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants and currently registered with Dalhousie University in a residency training program. Preference will be given to those who'll be studying at an institute other than their own. Selection will be made by the PGME Scholarship Committee.

Killam Postgraduate Medical Scholarships
These scholarships were established by the late Mrs. Izaak Walton Killam, and are awarded to postgraduate students in their third, fourth or fifth year of training in one of Dalhousie Medical School's clinical departments.
Selection by the Faculty Awards Committee is based on the recommendation of the department head that the candidate is likely to contribute to the advancement of learning or to win distinction in his/her specialty and could be recommended for appointment to the faculty of a medical school on completion of training.

The Bluteau Caseley Wealth Management Group MD Bursary
This bursary is open to Nova Scotia-based trainees entering their second year of residency training or above. Preference will be given to those who have contributed to policy and/or program development in the area of physician well-being.
The applicant should provide a completed application page (below) AND the following additional information:
1. Cover Letter from the resident describing any contributions made to policy and/or program development in the area of physician well-being or plans for future involvement in this area. The letter and summary should not exceed two pages.
2. Demonstration of financial need
3. Abbreviated CV (not to exceed 2 pages)
4. Two letters of reference; one of these must be from the candidate’s program director attesting to their good academic standing.
Selection of winners of the Bluteau Caseley Wealth Management Group MD Bursary will be based on the following criteria:
a. The candidate’s record of performance in residency
b. The candidate’s contributions in the area of physician health and well-being
c. The degree to which the bursary will contribute to future involvement in the area of physician health and well-being.
d. Content of the reference letters

Resident Research Awards
Celebrating resident research
Dalhousie Medical School's Resident Research Day is an annual event held in mid June. Resident winners from each of the Departmental Research Days will be invited to submit a written abstract or manuscript of their work to the postgraduate office.
Written submissions will be provided to a panel of judges selected by the research office from the clinical and basic science disciplines.
From submissions, the following winners will be selected:
- Best Overall Award - Sponsor: CSCI/CIHR
- Best Work in Basic Science Research - Sponsor: Dalhousie Medical Alumni Association
- Best Work in Clinical Research - Sponsor: Dalhousie Medical Alumni Association
- Best Research Award - Sponsor: Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation
- This is for a junior resident (PGY1 or PGY2) who has incorporated research into their primary training program
- Best Research Award - Sponsor: Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation
- This is for a senior resident (PGY3 and up) who has incorporated research into their primary training program

Dr. Patrick Madore Clinical Investigator Traineeships
The Madore Traineeship offers an opportunity to postgraduate students who are looking to expand and grow their existing knowledge and skillset. The traineeship provides resident salary support as they pursue one of two available program tracks: 1) Clinician Investigator Program and 2) Family Medicine Enhanced Skills Program.
Clinician Investigator Program
The Clinician Investigator Program promotes a broad interpretation of health research that spans many different disciplines. Participants are free to choose a research project in the discipline that best suits their future plans. The goal of the CIP is to provide medical residents with structured and rigorous research training—in the midst of their residency—so that they develop the research skills and experience they require to become clinician investigators upon completing their residency. Family Medicine Enhanced Skills Program
ESP is a one-year, full-time program offered to Dalhousie family medicine postgraduate students in year three, who are seeking to expand their expertise in an area best suited to their focused interest. Category two training can be offered, upon approval from family medicine, in a variety of areas including women’s health, addictions medicine, occupational medicine and general health research. For applicants to the Enhanced Skills Program, preference will be given to those focusing on the Clinical Scholar Program
