Supporting our community
Our clinical practice supports both adult and pediatric critical care, in the Maritime provinces. Our adult critical care department members provide patient care at the QEII Health Sciences Centre and the Dartmouth General Hospital. While our pediatric critical care intensivists provide care to patients at the IWK Health Centre.
QEII Victoria General Site (VG)
At the QEII Health Sciences Centre's Victoria General Site (VG), the Level 1 11-bed Medical/Surgical 3A ICU serves the needs of many surgery patients, as well as transplant patients. Patients cared for in this unit come from areas such as:
- the Multi-Organ Transplant Program
- general surgery
- thoracic surgery
- ear-nose-throat surgery
- urological surgery
- gynecological oncology
- oral maxillofacial surgeries
- the in-patient dialysis unit
- the bone marrow transplant unit
- hematology/oncology
- gastrointestinal medicine
- general medicine
QEII Halifax Infirmary Site (HI)
Also within the QEII Health Sciences Centre, the Halifax Infirmary Site (HI) is home to the Level 1 13-bed Medical/Surgical/Neuro 5.2 ICU, which admits patients from the surgical and medical services of:
- neurosurgery
- orthopedics
- trauma
- acute general surgery
- plastic surgery (including severely injured burn patients)
- general internal medicine
- respirology
- neurology
Dartmouth General Hospital (DGH)
The Dartmouth General Hospital offers a Level 2 intensive care unit (ICU), providing support for medical, surgical and coronary care patients in the Dartmouth region, and those referred in from other smaller hospitals across the central zone.
IWK Health Centre
The pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at the IWK Health Centre is an 8 bed open concept unit. The PICU cares for critically ill and injured children who require intensive care monitoring. The majority of patients are from newborn to 16-years-old from across Atlantic Canada.
