Education

Learning in a variety of settings as part of a multidisciplinary team

The Division of Palliative Medicine has a strong commitment to teaching medical students and residents and delivering continuing medical education for physicians and allied health professionals.

As a medical student, resident or practising physician, you will be exposed to the broad spectrum of palliative medicine in hospital, home and community settings. You will be part of our close-knit, multidisciplinary palliative care team.

Palliative Medicine is integrated throughout the Dalhousie MD curriculum, including in the case-based Integration Unit.

The Department of Medicine's Division of Palliative Medicine now offers a full-time two-year Palliative Medicine Subspecialty Residency Training Program. Beginning July 1, 2018, the Division of Palliative Medicine welcomed its first Royal College resident. The Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada approved the two-year residency program in March 2018.

The Division of Palliative Medicine and Department of Family Medicine at Dalhousie University also offer a full-time one-year Enhanced Skills Family Medicine Residency postgraduate training program in Palliative Care leading to a Certificate of Added Competence in Palliative Care, accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).

Our continuing medical education efforts include local in-hospital and community-based workshops and seminars along with national and international presentations.
