Medical Teaching Unit

Excellent educational opportunity, exceptional patient care

The Medical Teaching Units at the QEII Health Sciences Centre and the Saint John Regional Hospital are at the heart of Dalhousie’s core internal medicine residency program. They also provide essential training for non-medicine residents and medical students.

Medical Teaching Units employ a model of care that considers patient, learner and faculty needs. Patients are seen by multidisciplinary clinical teams that include a senior staff physician, resident physicians, nurses, pharmacists and others. The patients benefit from being seen by a clinical team, and residents benefit from a clinical teaching environment designed for learning.

The Medical Teaching Unit experience at the Saint John Regional Hospital is especially highly regarded by residents. Its patient population includes only those requiring internal medicine expertise, providing residents with appropriate and challenging cases. There are a limited number of residents on each clinical team, which provides ample opportunity for direct interaction with attending staff.
