Undergraduate Education

Experience obstetrics and gynaecology

As a medical student, you will have many opportunities to learn about obstetrics and gynaecology through electives and core medical education units. Our department also actively participates in the Research in Medicine program in the Med 1 and Med 2 years.

Undergraduate electives

Taking an elective is a great way to get experience in obstetrics and gynaecology. We offer electives in General Obstetrics & Gynaecology (either at the IWK or in community sites), Operative Gynaecology, Gynaecology Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Urogynaecology, and Reproductive Endocrinology.

Medical students from Dalhousie and other medical schools across Canada are welcome to apply for an elective with our department. To take an elective with us, you must first outline your learning objectives so we can assign you to the appropriate preceptors.

If you are a Dalhousie medical school student interested in arranging an elective, please contact:

Mary Boudreau
Education coordinator, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology mary.boudreau@iwk.nshealth.ca

If you are a non-Dalhousie medical school student in Canada interested in arranging an elective, please go to the AFMC portal:

MED 3 core units

During clerkship in Med 3, medical students take a six-week core unit in obstetrics and gynaecology, which includes one week of newborn experience. You will be a part of the clinical health care team and receive first-hand clinical experience in a variety of skills, including pelvic examination and the conduct of normal labour and delivery.

Half of our students will complete your rotation at the IWK Health Centre and half will go to other sites in the Maritime provinces. Students at the IWK will attend regularly scheduled seminar sessions during which the major problems encountered in obstetrics and gynaecology will be discussed. Students at other centres in the Maritimes will be able to access these seminars by video and teleconferencing.
