Education

Learning opportunities at all levels

The Division of Thoracic Surgery has a number of educational opportunities for learners of all levels.

Undergraduate Education:

Our faculty participate in the education of Dalhousie medical students through seminars and clinical tutorials. Medical students and residents rotating on our service will have the opportunity to gain exposure in chest tube insertion and management, endoscopy, and a variety of pulmonary mediastinal, and digestive diseases. The medical students and residents on our rotation will have weekly didactic teaching sessions.

Selectives and electives are available to medical students. For more information please contact Dr. Alexander Ednie via email.

Residency

Junior residents from multiple disciplines complete 1 to 2 month rotations on our service. Electives are available for senior residents. Residents will have an active role with inpatient management, and will be exposed to thoracic surgery clinic, endoscopy, and the operating room. Residents will be expected to participate in weekly Divisional rounds and Quality Assurance rounds. For more information please contact Dr. Dr. Alexander Ednie  via email.

Clinical Fellowship

We offer a clinical fellowship for Canadian and International Thoracic Surgeons. We offer a one to two year clinical fellowship to thoracic surgeons desiring exposure to minimally invasive thoracic surgery procedures involving the lung, pleura, mediastinum and esophagus. Our practice includes endoscopy, bronchoscopy and EBUS.  We have a diverse patient population and a high volume of cases which allows trainees to get over the steep learning curve that comes with minimally invasive surgery. For further information contact our Fellowship Director;  Dr. Aneil Mujoomdar

We provide care to patients throughout the province of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.  Trainees will have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of patient care including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.  Our faculty is dedicated to providing a supportive teaching atmosphere.
