Undergraduate Clerkship
Prepare for residency
The nine-week clerkship is designed to give you the experience you’ll need when you take on greater responsibilities as a resident. When you begin your clinical rotations, you will function as a member of the surgical team; you'll attend morning rounds, assist in the operating room and attend outpatient clinics.
During your clerkship, you’ll participate in three rotations, including a mandatory three-week general surgery rotation and two selective rotations that focus on one of the surgery subspecialties. You’ll also attend a seminar series throughout the surgery clerkship, which will cover the general principles of surgery.
What will I learn?
By the time you’re finished your general surgery clerkship, you’ll have a better understanding of the following areas:
- breast
- thyroid and parathyroid
- gastrointestinal surgery
- small bowel, colon and anus
- hernias
- gastrointestinal hemorrhage
- acute abdomen, biliary tract
- pancreas and liver
