Mission

Excellence in clinical care, academics and research

We're committed to helping our patients achieve well-being through dynamic and comprehensive programs and services, including clinical care and the education of undergraduate and postgraduate students, other health professionals and the public. We also strive to promote and participate in continuing medical education activities and aim to lead the advancement and dissemination of knowledge through research.

We accomplish this mission by:

  • maintaining a cadre of talented clinicians with the training and expertise they need to provide the most up-to-date diagnostic and therapeutic modalities in the management of urological conditions to the citizens of the Maritime provinces

  • providing undergraduate classes that ensure all Dalhousie medical graduates have a strong grasp of basic and clinical knowledge and sufficient clinical experience to competently handle common urological conditions at the primary care level, regardless of their eventual field of study

  • teaching and training to urology residents the knowledge and skills they need to become competent urology specialists; our postgraduate programs fulfill all of the requirements of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
  • organizing and promoting opportunities for internal and public educational events that deal with contemporary urological issues, based on needs assessments
  • supporting clinical and basic research in the department by providing a progressive and inquisitive atmosphere for students (which allows for the proper evaluation of new diagnostic and therapeutic developments and stimulates the departmental members who lead in the urological subspecialties)
  • encouraging supportive interactions with a variety of other medical disciplines, nurses and allied health professionals
  • actively participating in national and international academic specialty and subspecialty organizations
