Guidelines for a Studentship from the DalCREW

1. Applicants from all disciplines are welcome to apply provided the eligibility criteria below are met.

The applicant must

  1. 1.  Be a full-time registered student at Dalhousie University as either a master’s student or a PhD student (international students are eligible).
  2.  Be a research trainee who is either currently in a graduate program or is starting their program as of September 1, 2023.
  3. Have a faculty primary supervisor who is a core member of the DalCREW Team and who has been approved by the DalCREW Executive committee.
  4. A single core member can only supervise two studentship recipients per competition and only two trainees from a single lab can apply.
  5. Priority will be given to applicants conducting research that promotes collaboration between DalCREW members.
  6. This award must be accepted within 5 working days of the date of offer, or the award will be offered to the next fundable applicant.
  7. This award is available to start as of September 1, 2023. In special circumstances the start date may be extended.
  8. Successful applicants must accept FGS and Scotia Scholar scholarships before accepting FoM Scholarships.
  9. It is the responsibility of the applicant to inform the Medical Research Development Office immediately if they receive scholarship funding from other sources >$15,000 total.

 

2. How to apply

Applications for the DMRF Harry and Imogen Miller Cardiovascular Graduate Studentship  are now being administered under the Faculty of Medicine Graduate Studentships [Guidelines - fillable pdf]. All required signatures and information, as per the specifications detailed below, must be submitted as a single PDF document to the MRDO Office at mrdo@dal.ca. Incomplete and/or late applications will not be considered.

Please indicate "Cardiovascular" under the primary research area to be considered for this award.

Application Instructions

● Applications are e-mailed as a single PDF to MRDO@dal.ca. A complete application consists of (in the following order):

□  Application cover form
□   One page research proposal plus references (1” margins, 12pt font, single spaced)
□   Applicant’s CV (maximum 5 pages, including for example headings for degrees, awards, research experience, work experience, publications, presentations, extracurriculars)
□   Copy of undergraduate and graduate transcripts
□   Two letters of reference, at least one from the current supervisor (e-mailed separately by referees to MRDO@dal.ca)

Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Please note that some funding will be protected specifically for applicants who identify as Indigenous and Black students from Atlantic Canada 

3. Evaluation criteria

Applications will be screened by the Faculty of Medicine Scholarship Committee for:

Academic excellence Transcripts, CV (e.g., references, transcripts, awards, academic leadership)
● Candidate’s abilities (e.g., skills, contributions to research, extracurricular activities)
Quality of the proposed research (e.g., scope, clarity, and feasibility of the proposal)
Quality of the research environment (e.g., availability of research funding, technical support, potential for collaborations)
 

4. Terms of Award

 • Awards are valued at $15,000/year for up to two years and may be used to top-up a student’s scholarship support to a maximum of $25,000 for Masters students and $30,000 for Doctoral students (as per FGS scholarship limits).

• Students must maintain registration and good standing in their graduate program before the second year of funding will be released.

• The start date for the awards will be on September 1st the year an award is accepted.

• Awards must be accepted within 5 working days from the date of offer, or the award will be offered to the next fundable applicant.

• Successful applicants must accept FGS and Scotia Scholar scholarships before accepting FoM Scholarships.

• It is the responsibility of the applicant to inform the Medical Research Development Office immediately if they receive scholarship funding from other sources >$15,000 total.
