Dr. Carolyn Thomson - Assistant Dean (DMNS)

Dr. Carolyn Thomson

Dr. Carolyn Thomson (She/Her) has been a family physician and clinical educator for over three decades and is passionately committed to the well-being of both learners and physicians. Serving residents in Nova Scotia and PEI, Dr. Thomson provides assistance on a multitude of fronts. She supports to residents grappling with stress, burnout and mental health concerns and can assist with facilitating connections to essential health and wellness resources. She provides guidance and advocacy with leave of absences, accommodations, career advising and supports residents in academic difficulty and those experiencing learner mistreatment.

Dr. Lisa Sutherland (She/Her) is a family physician with interest and experience in supporting you in residency in the following domains: navigating transition times during training through to practice; burn out; accessing resources for mental and physical health during residency; advocacy and connection with Program; learner mistreatment; career planning and CaRMS preparation; accommodations; leaves of absence. Tyler Hall (He/Him) wears two hats in our office, being both Director of Student & Resident Affairs. If Residents need help with their CV or would like to talk about career planning please reach out. Roberta Preston - Learner Development Officer (DMNS)

Hello, I am Roberta Preston, the Learning Development Officer in Resident Affairs. I have been fortunate to live, work, and study in different areas of Canada and the UK. My background in medical education and executive coaching helped me complete my doctoral research on the impact of coaching on physician development. I continuously work to expand my knowledge on evidence-based methods that can specifically help in residency education. In my role as a Coach, I support Residents and Fellows on a wide range of topics, including stress management, exam preparation, time management, focus, starting a research project, and anything else related to personal or professional growth. Dr. Renea Leskie

Dr. Renea Leskie (she/her) wears two hats in our office, as Director of both Student & Resident Affairs.  With over 25 years of experience in student affairs, and having completed her doctoral research in student wellness, Dr. Leskie brings with her a passion for all areas of learner well-being including: personal health & wellness, career advising, financial advising and academic success.  Whether you are a student or resident, Dr. Leskie is happy to help in all of these areas and, more specifically, with coaching, time management, CaRMS prep, CVs, study techniques, academic accommodations, and budget management, to name a few!  Reach out anytime.  Email Dr. Renea Leskie.

Lisa Russell - Learner Engagement Coordinator (DMNB)

Lisa Russell brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our team. She has been the Regional Education Coordinator for Memorial University in New Brunswick for the past 7 years. Lisa finds helping and supporting learners during their medical education to be rewarding and fulfilling. Previously, she has spent 9 years in various business analyst roles at JD Irving after completing her business degree from the University of New Brunswick, Saint John. If you can’t find Lisa outside running or on the tennis courts, it is because she is trying to figure her way out of an escape room! Alvaro (Al) Tomas - Learner Communications Manager (DMNS)

Alvaro (he,him), casually known as Al, is a proud graduate of Dalhousie University, holding a Bachelor of Management with a specialization in Marketing Management. With a passion for community engagement, Al has been actively involved in supporting and organizing numerous cultural events in the local community over the past few years.

Currently, Al brings his expertise to the Faculty of Medicine, where he initially worked within the Student Affairs and Admissions teams. Excited to merge his marketing and communications skills with his role, Al serves as the Learner Communications Manager, dedicated to enhancing student experience and fostering effective communication within the faculty and promoting learner-faculty relationships.

Tanya Matheson - Evaluation Specialist (DMNS)

Tanya Matheson brings nearly two decades of experience in health education to her role as our Evaluation Specialist for Resident Affairs, Student Affairs, and Admissions. With a solid background in statistics, Tanya excels in developing questionnaires, conducting surveys, and managing data. Throughout her career, Tanya has worked in various facets of medical education, always aiming to enhance program effectiveness. At our office, she plays a key role in evaluating programs and projects, supporting data collection and analysis, and contributing to research and special initiatives.
