Biography

Dr. Calvino Cheng is a staff hematopathologist at Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre at the Nova Scotia Health Authority, Central Zone (NSHA) in Halifax.

Dr. Cheng completed a residency in hematological pathology in 2005 at the University of Alberta and finished an interdisciplinary PhD in 2017 at Dalhousie University with the faculties of Computer Sciences and Pathology. He is a professor in the Department of Pathology at Dalhousie University, the medical director of the Blood Transfusion Services at the Central Zone and medical director of the Pathology Informatics Group (PInG).

Dr. Cheng has been a member of the Laboratory pan-Canadian Standards Group and the Standards Collaborative Clinical Sub-Committee of Canada Health Infoway and was the first Chief Medical Information Officer for the Nova Scotia Health Authority. He also has a Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS-CA) designation. 

Dr. Cheng's major interests are in the areas of using health information systems’ data to discover new knowledge, improve patient care, and improve the functioning of the health care system.
