Biography

Dr. Beyea’s work focuses on the development, application and clinical/commercial translation of novel diagnostic imaging technologies.  Research in his lab encompasses the development of acquisition and reconstruction strategies for improved MRI, including through the use of AI deep learning methods, as well as research involving novel objective methods/metrics for characterizing "diagnostic quality” of medical images.  Two particular areas of interest include 1) development and clinical validation of sequences and protocols utilizing 0.5-T head-only MRI with 100 mT/s 400 T//m/s gradients, and 2) utilizing AI to determine in real-time the diagnostic quality, as opposed to image quality, of MR images.

Our Group

As the scientific lead for the BIOTIC research group, our team of researchers have access to a range of diagnostic imaging technologies embedded directly in the clinic, and actively collaborate with both clinical and commercial partners to validate and commercialize technologies.  This includes state of the art 1.5-T and 3-T MRIs, as well as the world’s first installation of Synaptive Medical’s 0.5-T head-only MRI.  Students interested in interdisciplinary research projects, particularly in the areas of low-field MRI, and applications of artificial intelligence to diagnostic imaging, should contact Dr. Beyea about ongoing research opportunities.
