Authorship Guidelines
Personnel in the BMS Core Facility are skilled scientists who provide essential technical and intellectual support to research projects. When they make a substantial intellectual and/or experimental contribution to a publication, they deserved to be properly recognized in publications and presentations.
When does the BMS Core personnel qualify for authorship on my research paper?
Some projects may require work that goes beyond routine services. Did you ask us to develop an entirely new approach? Or to optimize a specific protocol to better fit your research needs? Any substantial intellectual or experimental contributions by our team qualify the BMS Core personnel for authorship. Examples of such contributions include:
- Project design
- Development of new mass spectrometry approaches or protocols
- Significant data analysis and interpretation
- Manuscript writing beyond the methods section
When does the BMS Core personnel NOT qualify for authorship on my research paper?
If our contribution to your research is limited to routine paid services or minor writing assistance for the methods section, the BMS Core personnel does not qualify for authorship. However, we strongly encourage you to mention the Biological Mass Spectrometry Core Facility in the acknowledgements section of your publication. Proper acknowledgement helps support the growth and sustainability of the facility. It also provides an easy way for us to feature your published research article on our official web page!
Still unsure about how to acknowledge our contribution? Feel free to reach out to us at bms@dal.ca to discuss authorship.
