An Annual Photo and Writing Contest
Are you participating in community engagement activities? Do you have an idea for an inspiring image and story that conveys your thoughts and feelings about community, partnerships and health advocacy? If so, we want to hear from you.
This contest is open to the entire Dalhousie community and can include any community engagement related activity.
2027 Photo and Writing Contest
Deadline: March 1, 2027
We define community engagement broadly and encourage submissions on topics related to:
- Community Engaged Service Learning
- Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility
- Global Health
- Social Accountability
- Partnerships to Advance Health Equity
- Social Determinants of Health
- Health Systems Capacity Building through Partnership
- Planetary Health and Sustainability
Snapshots of Engagement invites participants to tell a story about community engagement through the combination of one photograph and one accompanying narrative.
The photograph may inspire the story, or the story may provide meaning and context for the photograph. Either way, the image and written narrative should work together to tell a compelling story about community engagement.
Entry Guidelines
Each entry must:
- Include one photograph and one accompanying written narrative.
- Address or reflect an aspect of community engagement.
- Include a narrative of no more than 500 words.
- Include a completed entry form.
- Be the entrant's original work, including both the photograph and narrative.
- Have permission from all identifiable individuals appearing in the photograph.
- Be appropriate for a general audience.
- Be submitted as either:
- a digital photograph at 300 dpi, suitable for printing at 8 × 10 inches, or
- an 8 × 10-inch printed photograph.
- Published and previously unpublished work are both eligible.
- A maximum of 2 submissions per person will be permitted.
Photo Rights and Usage
The Office of Community Engagement retains the rights to use the photographs indefinitely and free of charge in print communications, web communications, or any other Dalhousie global health related project. Photos may be used to promote education, research and service to advance community engagement at Dalhousie, proper accreditation will be provided when possible.
Submissions will be judged on the following criteria:
- Connection to Community Engagement
- Connection Between Image and Narrative
- Storytelling and Impact
- Creativity and Originality
- Photographic Quality and Visual Appeal
