Join us in welcoming Dr. Kevin Pottie to the Dalhousie Family Medicine team as Research’s new Clinician Researcher.
Dr. Pottie, MD, CCFP, MClS, CCFP, is a distinguished Professor and Research Chair in Family Medicine at Dalhousie University, where he also earned his medical degree. Proficient in English, French, and Spanish, Dr. Pottie has led a remarkable 20-year research endeavor focused on health equity and evidence-based guidelines. His journey in refugee health and humanitarian efforts commenced with Médecins Sans Frontières during the Russia-Georgian war and has since extended across more than 25 countries.
Now based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Dr. Pottie is committed to addressing pressing challenges such as poverty, homelessness, and disparities in healthcare. He plays a pivotal role as a convener of the International Campbell and Cochrane Equity Methods Group and the GRADE Guidelines Working Group, while also serving as a professor of family medicine and holding an endowed research chair at Dalhousie University.
Dr. Pottie’s systematic reviews and patient-centric clinical guidelines are transforming primary care clinical approaches to refugee and migrant health, homeless populations, and ‘deprescribing’ for the elderly. His influential contributions extend to leading roles in organizations like the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care and collaborations with WHO Geneva.
Acknowledged for his outstanding contributions, Dr. Pottie received the College of Family Physicians of Canada Researcher of the Year Award in 2021 and was honored with the Ian McWhinney Chair at Western University. Internationally, he was recognized as one of five international recipients of the Inclusive Health Research Awards for his project titled Canadian Collaboration for Immigrant and Refugee Health: Power of Sharing Newcomer Stories Program.
Embracing digital transformation, Dr. Pottie has pursued training AI training, taking the Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare Leaders and Intellectual Property Strategy course. He actively engages in healthcare system consultancy, working on integrating clinical pharmacists, health navigators and internationally trained health professionals into primary care practices.
Aligned with his commitment to scientific excellence and social accountability, Dr. Pottie’s work embodies a dedication to fostering a vibrant research culture that accelerates medical discovery, with a shared vision of positively impacting health and quality of life.
