Biography

Dr. Elsawy is an Associate Professor of Medicine, a Hematologist/Transplant and Cellular Therapy Specialist, and The Medical Director of NSH IEC (CAR T-Cell) Therapy Program. He is the local principal investigator on several leukemia and cell therapy clinical trials in NS. Dr. Elsawy led an interdisciplinary team to establish the first CAR T-cell therapy Program in Atlantic Canada.

Research interests

Dr. Elsawy’s research interests are focused on the management of myeloid malignancies in older adults and on providing Immune Effector Cell Therapy (IEC) e.g., CAR T-cell therapy. Additionally, he has a special interest in making individualized treatment decisions guided by incorporating patients’ comorbidity assessment and studying patient reported outcomes (PROs) and quality of life. Dr. Elsawy is actively engaged in building local capacity in NS for point-of-care manufacturing of academic CAR T-cell products as part of a national effort.

Awards

Dr. Elsawy was honored to be the recipient of 2023 Doctor Nova Scotia Dr. William Grigor Award for his role in advancing research and treatment for Nova Scotians with blood cancer through the introduction of CAR T- cell therapy in NS by establishing the first in Atlantic Canada CAR T-cell Therapy Program in Halifax.
