About the opportunity |
The Departments of Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Dalhousie University and the IWK Health Centre are seeking applicants for one faculty position in the Perinatal Epidemiology Research Unit (PERU). This position is a tenure-stream, full-time faculty position with a joint appointment in both departments (50% in each department). Academic rank and remuneration will be commensurate with experience. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2026. Dalhousie University is a leading academic and research institution in Atlantic Canada. PERU comprises three full-time PhD-trained faculty members and the Departments of Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology have an active cadre of PhD-trained and clinical researchers. Through close ties with the Reproductive Care Program of Nova Scotia and Health Data Nova Scotia, scientists affiliated with PERU will have access to the population-based provincial perinatal and administrative health databases and other clinical and administrative data sources. Dalhousie University also houses the Atlantic Research Data Centre. The successful candidate will also be supported administratively by IWK Health Research Services. The environment is highly favourable for conducting epidemiologic research. The successful candidate is expected to attain regional and/or national funding to pursue an active independent research program focused on pediatric epidemiology, which may include child health, or perinatal research with a focus on neonatal and infant health. They will engage in collaborative research projects with faculty in the Dalhousie academic community, including clinical faculty within the Departments of Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. The position requires active and committed involvement in teaching residents, fellows, and medical students. The successful candidate will be encouraged to apply for a cross-appointment with the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology or another graduate degree program, which will provide the opportunity for graduate student supervision, teaching, and collaboration. The position involves some contribution to administration and service at the departmental, university, and national levels. The candidate’s academic qualifications must include a PhD degree in Epidemiology or a related area with demonstrated evidence of research in pediatric or perinatal health research. The proposed program of research should be in population health research, infectious disease epidemiology, clinical epidemiology, or quantitative health policy evaluation. The candidate must have a demonstrated ability to independently conduct research in their field and have the potential to attain regional and national funding to support that research. The capacity to engage in collaborative projects and expertise using large databases will be considered strong assets. Teaching experience, enthusiasm, and vision are required. Job Description
The Division of Gynecologic Oncology is welcoming applications for academic medical staff positions. We are expanding to a division of 5.8 FTE within the C/AFP (Clinical Academic Funding Plan) in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
Our primary site is in Halifax with outreach to community centers for clinical care. The group works closely with radiation oncology, pathology, and genetics. We enjoy strong clinical and academic collaboration with gynecologists, oncology nurse practitioners, and those in general oncologic practice. We have strong academic and research partnerships with foundational scientists and epidemiologists. Department members participate in medical education and clinically oriented research. Within our Collective Practice, we are particularly interested in provincial quality of care initiatives to ensure equitable access and delivery of care. We currently work in a Collective Care Clinical Model, and within this is a shared surgical practice.
We are looking for a new collaborative team member who exhibits innovative thinking and is dedicated to providing the highest quality care for patients living with gynecologic cancers in Nova Scotia.
Qualifications
Applicants require a RCPSC Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology or equivalent. They should have an interest in pursuing teaching/education and research within their professional scope. Experience in clinical practice is preferred.
The successful applicant will have a M.D. or equivalent degree and RCPSC Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology specialist certification or equivalent.
You must be eligible for licensure as a specialist by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (https://cpsns.ns.ca/registration-licensing/).
Dalhousie’s Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology have a Clinical and Academic Funding Plan (C/AFP) and physicians will be compensated as part of the practice plan.

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Dalhousie University in Halifax Nova Scotia has an immediate opening for up to 2 locum physicians. We are welcoming applications for academic medical staff position(s). The Division provides gynecologic oncology care mainly for the province of Nova Scotia which has a population of over 1M, about half of whom live outside of the Halifax Regional Municipality. We also provide surgical gynecologic oncology services for the patients of PEI who make up approximately 10 percent of our surgical volume.
Our primary site is in Halifax with outreach to community centers for clinical care. The group works collaboratively with radiation oncology, pathology, and genetics within the Nova Scotia Cancer Care Program. Department members participate in the education of medical students and residents and a wide range of clinical and preclinical research with local collaborators in foundational science and epidemiology. Within our Collective Practice, we are particularly interested in provincial quality of care initiatives to ensure equitable access and delivery of care. We currently work in a Collective Care Clinical Model, and within this is a shared surgical practice. The ideal candidate(s) will be flexible and exhibit innovative thinking.
Halifax is a growing, dynamic city with a high percentage of residents involved in post-secondary education and health care. The province of Nova Scotia is making significant investments in health care and have implemented many innovative programs and approaches to address the universal challenges faced within the health care system. The term of the locum(s) will commence as soon as possible, and we will work with the successful candidate(s) to provide an appealing term length. It is anticipated that there will be permanent faculty positions advertised in the very near future.
Applicants require a RCPSC Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology or equivalent. The successful candidates will be required to provide the full scope of gynecologic oncology care including systemic therapy, surgical gynecologic oncology and call coverage.
