Calendar of Events

February 2024

February is African History Month in the province of Nova Scotia and Black History Month in Canada.

Few people in Canada are aware of the fact that African people were once enslaved in the territory that is now known as Canada, or of how those who fought enslavement helped to lay the foundation of Canada’s diverse and inclusive society.” (Canada.ca)

February also sees Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival, which falls on the 10th this year. It is the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar, and is the most important festival in China and several east Asian countries. It is celebrated through family reunion dinners, honouring ancestors, exchanging gifts to encourage luck and prosperity, and vibrant festivals. In a twelve-year cycle, each year coincides with an animal in the Chinese zodiac; 2024 is the Year of the Dragon. (earthsky.org)
