August begins with Emancipation Day (1 August), the anniversary of the 1834 date when the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire, including territories which would eventually become Canada. Emancipation Day is a day to educate and engage, with the goal to eliminate anti-Black racism and discrimination which persists to this day. (Government of Canada)
