Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong condition that each child, adolescent and adult experiences differently. Each person with ASD is unique, but common characteristics include:
- differences in social and communicative development
- repetitive behaviour/restricted or intense interests/differences in sensory interest or reactions
With appropriate services and supports, people with ASD can live fulfilling, productive lives and be valuable contributors to society. Some of the interventions that can make a big difference for individuals with ASD include:
- behavioural intervention
- speech-language/communication therapies
- psychological interventions, including cognitive behavioural therapy
- coping techniques
- medication, for some associated symptoms
