Please join us in congratulating the 2023 recipient of the Dr. Charles Lo Prize in Radiology Research: Dr. Kim Brewer!

Announced annually at Radiology Research Day, the Dr. Charles Lo Prize in Radiology Research provides the ability to recognize our faculty investigators for their exceptional research efforts.

Dr. Brewer joined the department in 2014. The research Dr. Brewer directs in her pre-clinical imaging facility aims to develop new diagnostic imaging tools combining MRI, PET, CT and SPECT, including the next generation of nuclear medicine probes capable of directly targeting disease biomarkers and processes. This pre-clinical work is critical to the fundamental understanding of these diseases and for testing and evaluating potential therapeutics. This research is one of the initial steps towards the clinical application of molecular imaging biomarkers and the implementation of personalized medicine. She is a global leader developing non-invasive ways of using MRI and PET/MR to visualize inflammation processes that are so critical to the newest class of immunotherapeutic drugs, which utilize patients’ own immune systems to target disease.

Since joining the department, she has published 18 peer reviewed journal articles (with two more in review), and 39 conference abstracts. Notably, all of her publications involve trainees/students across a range of academic stages from undergraduate to postdoctoral – she has supervised the research projects of 30 students since taking her position in Halifax. In the past six years, she has given eight invited lectures, including at major international conferences such as the World Molecular Imaging Society and the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine. She has received a CIHR Institute for Cancer Research Early Career Researcher Award, has served on numerous tri-council (NSERC and CIHR) granting review panels and is a member of the CIHR Institute for Cancer Research Advisory Board.

Congratulations, Dr. Brewer!
