Rhinology/General

Solving nasal and sinus problems

The Rhinology service at Dalhousie is offered at the Victoria General Hospital, with an outpatient clinic on the 3rd floor of the Dickson Building. Referrals are accepted from primary care physicians, ear, nose and throat specialists, as well as other specialists.

Rhinology offers a full array of services for patients with nasal and sinus problems. We collaborate with such services as allergy, immunology and respirology to provide coordinated, comprehensive care.

Our services include:

Endoscopic sinus surgery

We are the tertiary care referral centre for complex sinus cases in Nova Scotia and the rest of the Maritimes. Our Endoscopic surgical portfolio includes primary and revision cases of chronic sinusitis, benign nasal lesions, as well as lacrimal surgery.

Endoscopic sinus surgery is performed at the Victoria General Hospital OR suite equipped with an Image Guided Navigation system.

Endoscopic Skull Base Service

Run in collaboration with Neurosurgery, the Endoscopic Skull Base Service includes management of patients with pituitary tumours as well as an array of other skull base lesions. Skull base surgeries are performed at the Halifax Infirmary.

Endoscopic orbital decompression and surgery for orbital tumours

Endoscopic orbital decompression and surgery for orbital tumours are done in collaboration with the Occuloplastic Surgery.

Education and research

Our Rhinology teaching program includes an interactive lecture series, operative simulation training at the Surgical Skills Lab, as well as hands-on training in the Outpatient Clinic and the operating room.

We collaborate with the College of Pharmacy in research on peptide transport systems across the nasal mucosa. We are also working on developing innovative approaches to the management of chronic sinusitis and have been productive in outcomes research as well as population health in chronic sinusitis.
