Undergraduate Electives

Explore family medicine

Curious about what the Department of Family Medicine has to offer? Explore the field with one of our electives.

Electives can be two to four weeks long with preceptors across the Maritimes. Although requests are placed on a first-come, first-served basis, we cannot confirm any placements until after third-year core clerkship placements are made in the spring. Any elective requests made before this are recorded and will be considered after the clerkship match is completed.

Visiting Elective Students

Placements across the Maritimes

Our electives are open to visiting students from Canadian schools in their second-last or final year, and from international schools in their final year.

Our goal is to find a suitable placement for all requests, but due to limited opportunities, we strongly encourage you to consider a rural placement.

There's no funding available from Dalhousie Family Medicine to reimburse travel and accommodations for electives.

How to apply

You must submit an application through Dalhousie University’s Undergraduate Medical Education office.

The Department of Family Medicine will only be notified once your complete application has been received by the Undergraduate Medical Education office. We strongly recommend submitting a complete application with all supporting documentation as soon as possible.

Undergraduate Medical Education will notify you as soon as they confirm your placement. We realize you'll need to make alternate arrangements if you aren't placed, we'll notify you one month before the start date of your rotation if we can't accommodate your request.

Med I and II Electives (Dalhousie Students)

Discover new interests

As a medical student, you'll have the opportunity to explore your interests and discover a specialty by taking a horizontal elective during your first and second year. Our electives allow you to explore areas of interest before you begin your clerkship.

How to apply

We will circulate information on the application process for Family Medicine Med I and II electives in August.

Please note: as we often have more requests for electives than the number of placements, we conduct a random draw of all applicants in September.
