Dr. Shuba was born in Kiev, Ukraine. Before coming to Halifax, Canada in 1992, she attended Medical Institute in Kiev. In 1996 she earned a PhD degree from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada in cardiac electrophysiology. She went on to complete her MD degree and Ophthalmology residency at Dalhousie University, and a Glaucoma Fellowship with Drs. Alward and Kwon at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, USA.

She is currently a Professor and and Head, and a Glaucoma Fellowship Director at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Dalhousie University in Halifax. Her research interests are in the area of modulation of wound healing during glaucoma filtration surgery. Dr. Shuba is enjoying balancing her busy professional and family life.
