Dalhousie University Department of Surgery has 30 incoming fellows starting in summer 2023.  These fellows are enrolled in a variety of university-based and hospital-based fellowship programs that span the breadth of surgical specialties at Nova Scotia Health and IWK Health.

These fellowship programs have been under the umbrella of the Dalhousie University Department of Surgery Fellowship Committee that had been led by orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Mark Glazebrook, from 2013-2023.  This departmental committee had been created in large part to general surgeon, Dr. Brock Vair’s, involvement in the Capital Health / IWK / Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine Fellowship Working Group.  As Dalhousie University DOS’s Director of Education at the time, Dr. Vair helped develop our medical school’s Fellowship Education Advisory Committee (FEAC) with goals of creating standards for training, evaluation and accountability; standardizing the recruitment and application processes; stabilizing a funding base; structurally aligning our fellows with other medical learners; and creating infrastructure support for all fellowship candidates regardless of training ‘stream’ or funding source.

Fast forward to 2023, after 10 years as the Dalhousie DOS Fellowship Committee Chair, Dr. Glazebrook’s leadership has been supremely effective in achieving all of those goals. With exceptional support and organization from Lesli Smith, Dalhousie DOS Resource Coordinator, the DOS Fellowship Committee has met all of the goals of our university’s Fellowship Education Advisory Committee.  It is important to note that most fellowship programs within DOS are hospital-based programs housed within either Capital Health or IWK Health.  Terms of Reference, application forms, and assessment forms are just a few of the projects that members of the Fellowship Committee have completed.
