Graduate Travel Awards

Now accepting applications for April 2025!

The Faculty of Medicine Travel Award Program was established with the objective of supporting or partially supporting graduate student participation in national or international conferences for the presentation of their original research.  There will be two annual award competitions, one in April and one in October subject to available funding.

For the current competition, applications will open April 1, 2025 and close on April 30, 2025.

Grant Amount and Authorized Expenditures

  • These grants are intended to help cover the essential costs associated with attending conferences, including expenses related to transportation, registration fees, accommodation and meals.
  • Please include your full event budget.  Awards will be determined based on available funds.

Eligibility Criteria

  • This award is open to all Dalhousie graduate students currently enrolled in a Faculty of Medicine graduate program, including Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Community Health and Epidemiology, Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Medical Neuroscience, Medical Physics Microbiology and Immunology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology and Biophysics, or Psychiatry
  • Eligible recipients must provide evidence of abstract acceptance by the conference.
  • Conferences and other travel eligible for the award will take place within 6 months before or after this award closing date (Dec 1, 2024 - Oct 1, 2025).
  • Preference will be given to graduate students in Faculty of Medicine programs whose supervisor holds their primary appointment in the Faculty of Medicine.

Submission Process

Once the student completed their application, the supervisor will receive an email with a link to complete their portion of the application within ONE BUSINESS DAY.

It is the students responsibility to ensure the supervisor has received and completed the application.

  • Applications must be completed by the student and the supervisor.
  • A completed application form and,
  • A copy of conference registration and acceptance.

Applications must be submitted in in SharePoint and must contain the following: 

File naming format for uploads: Student’s Last Name_Student’s First Name_Travel Award

Deadline and Competition Schedule

  • The application deadline for the current competition for the Katheryn Weldon, Northwater Capital, and the Faculty of Medicine Travel Awards is April 30, 2025.

Award Selection Process

  • The selection of award recipients will be carried out by the Scholarship and Awards Committee which is a subcommittee of the Faculty of Medicine  Research Advisory Committee (RAC).
  • The selection criteria may include the type of presentation, financial need, quality of the abstract and primary appointment of the supervisor. *Supervisors who have been appointed for longer than 5 years in the Faculty of Medicine and who hold start-up funding will be considered to have low priority with respect to financial need.
  • If more than one travel award application is received from the same supervisor, the supervisor must include a cover letter including the ranking of applicants from their lab to mrdo@dal.ca prior to the application deadline.
