Triage criteria and referral process for physicians

Rheumatology

Emergent
Criteria (not all inclusive)
  • Suspected septic arthritis
  • Aggressive connective tissue disease or systemic vasculitis
Process
1) PHONE 902-473-2220 "Rheumatologist on call"
OR
2) FAX referral marked URGENT with the following:
  • CBC/ESR/CRP
  • urea
  • electrolytes
  • creatinine
  • uric acid
  • urinalysis
Urgent
Criteria (not all inclusive)
  • Acute monoarthritis (non-septic)
  • Polyarthritis with functional impairment
  • Connective tissue diseases which is active, but not life threatening
Process
1) FAX or MAIL referral with following:
  • CBC/ESR/CRP
  • urea
  • electrolytes
  • creatinine
  • uric acid
  • urinalysis
  • rheumatoid factor
  • ANA
  • x-ray symptomatic joints
Semi-Urgent
Criteria (not all inclusive)
  • Patients new to province with previously diagnosed Inflammatory Arthritis or stable Connective Tissue Disease
Process
1) FAX or MAIL referral with the following:
  • CBC/ESR/CRP
  • x-ray symptomatic joints
Non-Urgent
Criteria (not all inclusive)
  • Chronic generalized and regional pain syndromes involving the musculoskeletal system

  • CBC/ESR/CRP
