Division Head Message

Diverse opportunities for learners

Respirology is a diverse subspecialty of internal medicine that offers a varied practice, from acute care medicine to chronic disease management in a multidisciplinary setting. It is a specialty that requires a strong understanding of respiratory anatomy (e.g., diagnostic imaging), bronchoscopy and physiology (e.g., pulmonary function tests, cardiopulmonary exercise tests, sleep studies, mechanical ventilation).

The Dalhousie University Division of Respirology provides students and residents the opportunity to learn and train in a regional tertiary care service that offers an ideal environment for patient care, education programs and research.

Our division members are actively engaged in clinical research in areas such as cystic fibrosis, lung transplantation, obstructive lung diseases, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary rehabilitation and sleep medicine.

As respirologists, our primary goal is to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life for our patients. We are confident that our respirology graduates are well prepared to embark upon diverse and rewarding medical careers to achieve that goal.

Sincerely,

Dr. Paul Hernandez
Division head/service chief, Division of Respirology
