National Day of Action on Planetary Health

The website includes a link for individuals to sign an open letter with 3 calls to action:

  1. Increase the resourcing, ambition and coordination of the federal government’s climate and health secretariat.
  2. Support a national education center for planetary health.
  3. Protect healthcare systems across Canada by ensuring the health and economic costs of pollution are addressed

There is an interactive map with Actions listed. Please add your Actions, big or small. As long as you have a description, time and location you can enter it on the form, and it'll be pinned on the map. There are suggestions for Actions on the website.

The following events are occurring on October 6:

  1. Health and Climate Change sponsored by the CMA, the Trottier Family Foundation and the Globe and Mail in person in Toronto and online - 12 to 5 PM ET = 1 to 6 PM AT

Actions by local groups include:

  1. Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS), Environment and Public Health Committees - Will advocate for Protection of Sandy Lake and Blue Mountain Birch Cove with NS MLAs. 
  2. The DNS Section of Planetary Health endorsed the CMA Policy on Environmentally Sustainable Health Systems in Canada https://policybase.cma.ca/viewer?file=%2Fmedia%2FPolicyPDF%2FPD23-02.pdf#page=1. Cristin Muecke, Chair of the Planetary Health Section presented the policy to the Policy and Health Issues Committee which is currently considering moving it forward to the Board.
  3. Choosing Wisely NS will announce a conference scheduled for November with Emergency Medicine
  4. The Dalhousie Office of Sustainability will promote the event through social media.
  5. NSH CZ Sustainability Committee will promote the event and make an announcement of sustainable healthcare initiatives.
  6.  Dalhousie Department of Pathology is:
    a. Promoting October 6 on its website
    b. Including a presentation on the Dalhousie Sustainable Labs Program in its annual retreat on September 25
    c. Celebrating the day by an email announcement on October 6 of which labs committed to undergoing sustainable lab certification.
