Program Description
We focus on you
As a moderately sized residency program, we’re the perfect size to offer you significant exposure to pediatrics—both general and specialized—and to give you plenty of opportunity to work one-on-one with our highly regarded faculty members.
You’ll experience pediatrics from an inpatient and ambulatory perspective while rotating through all major subspecialties. During the program, you’ll be supervised by attending staff, but you’ll also have the opportunity to:
- learn and make decisions at an early stage
- teach more junior medical staff and other medical and paramedical personnel
- attend a Neonatal Resuscitation Program and a Pediatric Advanced Life Support course
Research
At Dalhousie, we place a lot of importance on research. As a trainee, you’ll be encouraged to present your research findings at a national or international meeting. Each year, you’ll be subsidized to attend one educational meeting (up to $1,500) and full reimbursement is available to attend a meeting if you are presenting. You’ll also be encouraged to present at an annual Resident Research Day.
A minimum of one scholarly project is required to be completed during pediatric residency. All residents take a comprehensive Academic Skills Course in their first year. This course will cover research methodology, grant writing and submissions to the Ethics Review Board. Four weeks of research time is provided in the PGY2 year with more time permitted and encouraged in the third and fourth years of training to facilitate the completion of their scholarly project.
