Endocrinology and Metabolism
Identifying novel therapeutic approaches
Endocrinology and metabolism considers the synthesis and biological actions of biologically active signaling molecules such as hormones and cytokines. These chemical signals act at the local and systemic levels to influence a diverse array of physiological processes including:
- stem cell differentiation
- tissue development
- reproductive function
- behaviour
- systemic energy metabolism
Alterations in the production and activity of hormones and cytokines are known to contribute to several prevalent disorders including obesity, diabetes and osteoporosis, as well as developmental abnormalities. As such, identification of novel therapeutic approaches to correct these alterations is an active area of pharmacological research.
