Academic Seminars
Rigorous academic learning opportunities
Our department boasts a very strong scientific and academic program that includes numerous seminars by and for residents. Each Wednesday, you'll be relieved of clinical duties to attend an academic half-day. This is mandatory for all PGY-2 to PGY-5 residents on the urology service.
Academic half-days consist of various activities, including:
- monthly pathology and diagnostic imaging seminars
- approximately 12-16 “urology schools”, which are coordinated by faculty members, each addressing a different urological topic
- Campbell Urology and AUA Update Series reviews
- CanMeds sessions
You'll also participate in formal full-day surgical simulation activities that take place in the newly built, state-of-the-art Surgical Skills Centre approximately four to six times yearly. This is also where you'll attend your January and June surgical skills examinations and evaluations.
You'll benefit from a range of interactive opportunities, from weekly inter-hospital grand rounds and genitourinary oncology site rounds to monthly journal clubs, plus you'll receive protected research and study time.
There are regularly scheduled MCQ, SAQ and OSCE examinations. PGY-1 and PGY-2s: a Surgical Foundations lecture series takes place weekly in preparation for the POS exam and is coordinated by the general surgery department.
