Mi’kmaq/Indigenous Research Assistant (part-time-maximum 20 hours per month for 12 months) Faculty of Health (School of Social Work & School of Nursing).
An interdisciplinary research team led by Dr. Sara Torres (Social Work, Dalhousie) and Dr. Ingrid Waldron (Nursing, Dalhousie) requires a Mi’kmaq/Indigenous part-time research assistant to work closely with their team to support data collection and analyses (qualitative) and organizing of workshops with community members to disseminate results of the research project. This research project aims to identify support systems and strategies to strengthen the capacity of families from urban Indigenous, African Nova Scotian, and immigrant and refugee populations in the Halifax Regional Municipality to mobilize communities to prevent the entry or re-entry of children into state care. An objective of this research project is to examine participants’ perceptions on the role that families, communities and formal systems play in building the capacity of the above communities in fostering protective environments for families and children.
The research assistant will assist with multiple tasks for the urban Indigenous component of the research project, including liaising with community-based organizations working with urban Indigenous populations, conducting interviews, analyzing interviews, organizing workshops, developing products to communicate research findings, and performing administrative office and other tasks as needed.
Requirements:
- Must be a Mi’kmaq or Indigenous person.
- Experience conducting and providing feedback on interviews.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently, as well as a member of a team.
- Excellent writing, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Experience with basic administrative functions and working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience working collaboratively with community-based research, familiarity and comfortability with the urban Indigenous community is a must.
Status: Part-time (20 hrs/month for 12 months)
Start Date: March 19th
Pay Scale: $23.60 per hour ($20/hour + 18 benefits)
