Med 1 & 2 Elective Unit

The ophthalmology department participates in the Med 1 and 2 elective unit. This longitudinal, half elective occurs during the fall or winter term over a 12-week period. Due to more interest than availability, we only offer a half-unit elective so that we may accommodate more students. Students will be assigned a main preceptor in the ophthalmology department and will join them for clinics and ORs (schedule permitting). As part of the elective students are expected to complete a scholarly project.

During this elective students are welcome to attend the Dept of Ophthalmology Grand Rounds.

Only half unit elective is offered in Ophthalmology during the first 2 years of medical school. If a Med-1 student does an elective in Ophthalmology, they should not apply again to this discipline when in Med-2. The Med-2 students can apply for half unit only. If they do an elective in Ophthalmology in the first half of the academic year, they should not apply again in the second half. This policy has been developed due to preceptor capacity and to maintain fairness for students.
