Posted by GHO Admin on January 26, 2015 in Events

Date: Feb 6, 2015 @ 12-5pm
Location: University of New Brunswick Faculty of Law (Ludlow Hall) 41 Dineen Dr., Fredericton, NB

Playing By The Rules: State & Non-State Actors and Compliance With IHL

Join the UNB International Law Society and the Red Cross as they host their annual international humanitarian law (IHL) conference.

All wars challenge our humanity.  International Humanitarian Law (IHL) aims to preserve a measure of humanity amidst conflict, but how do we ensure all sides of a conflict respect these rules of wars?  How are militaries and rebel groups educated on IHL, and held responsible when the laws are broken?  Experts with theoretical and practical knowledge will present and discuss getting all parties to the conflict to ‘play by the rules’ in the 21st century.

The amazing line of speakers is as follows:

  • Jonathan Somer (Persona Grata Consulting)
  • Andrew Carswell (International Committee of the Red Cross in Washington)
  • Robert Petit (Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Section, Justice Canada)
  • Catherine Gribbin (Canadian Red Cross)

All welcome. Brown-bag lunch provided.
