An Invitation from the Program Director, Postgraduate Education

In the Dalhousie Department of Anesthesia, Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine program, you will be learning and working beside more than 100 staff anesthesiologists and other care providers dedicated to their patients. The postgraduate curriculum is among the highest quality in the country – specialty knowledge will be gained through clinical experience, simulation training, grand rounds, seminars, literature reviews, journal club and conferences. And because you will be training in Atlantic Canada’s top teaching hospitals, where more than 76,000 procedures annually are provided by anesthesia department members, you will be exposed to a wide diversity and complexity of cases and situations. Through the five years of the Royal College-accredited residency program, you will gain the clinical, academic, research and professional experience you need to become a highly competent, compassionate anesthesiologist.

Your colleagues will provide a collegial, supportive environment for you to learn and train. You will be surrounded by people who will challenge you to understand the science, be inquisitive and push the limits of your learning. Many Department members are international leaders in their fields, shaping the future of anesthesiology, pain management, perioperative care, airway management and patient safety. They will cheer on your successes and be there to support you when you struggle.

And then there’s the place: Halifax, Nova Scotia. Everything nice you’ve heard about this city, and province, is true. Sandy beaches, pristine lakes, hiking trails and ocean surf. Lively bar music and a rich arts community in our urban core. Yes, work is important – and so too is play. We’re a friendly lot – a people that understand the term “quality of life” means finding balance and caring about our community. There’s a good reason why a book was once written about Nova Scotia called The Last Best Place.
