Residency

Why Dal Anesthesia

Exceptional education and research opportunities in a vibrant maritime city

At Dalhousie, you’ll receive the highest-quality subspecialty training in anesthesia as well as exceptional teaching and research opportunities.

Our postgraduate curriculum is among the most advanced in the country, and a place in our residency program has become one of the most sought-after.

The Program

We deliver an exceptionally strong residency program with a learner-centered focus. We believe in continuous improvement and are on our way to being a leader in competency-based medical education.

As a resident, you’ll gain the clinical, academic, research, and professional experience you need to become a highly competent, compassionate anesthesiologist and leader in your chosen field. Since 2016, we have been offering competency-based medical education, providing you with the necessary support and preparation to successfully pass the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons exams. We are continuously evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of our approach to CBME to ensure our fully-accredited program offers the best balance of wellness, support, and success.

After residency, we offer several one-year fellowships to further strengthen your expertise with advanced clinical training and research and teaching opportunities. You can apply for one of seven fellowships in specific subspecialties that are designed to meet individual interests and aspirations. They include a competitive salary, mentorship, and research support.

The people

Supportive faculty and colleagues

We train residents to be highly skilled anesthesiologists able to work with patients, families and colleagues to provide excellent care in many different contexts and in complex and uncertain situations. We challenge fellows, residents and medical students to better understand the complex science of anesthesia. And we do this in an environment that fosters collegiality versus competition, and where faculty members and your peers will support you as you struggle, overcome and succeed.
